1. When starting a block from scratch, cast using the long tail cast-on.
2. When adding stitches to an existing block, cast on additional stitches at beginning of square by knitting the stitches on. Cast on additional stitches at end of square using the backwards loop cast-on.

- Knit the first stitch of the first row of each square. (Don’t ask me why but I’m never happy with how this stitch looks any other way).
- Knit into the back loop (KB) of the first stitch of every row
- Purl last stitch of every row.
